How do I write about myself? How do I write about myself in relation to something I really want? How do I write about myself in relation to how I think? How do I put things into words when it feels like there is something else at stake? When I feel like each word or not-word will become my doing or undoing... How do I write then?
I am enough. I am enough. In the balance of things when a decision feels to be on a scale, the best thing to do is to come as you are, because that is the most honest you can be. You can aim to write to please, but that will open the doors of doubt and re-thinking... You have digested the world of information they have shared with you - now communicate through, your understanding of it.
Please provide a biography, including your work and experience. Please write N/A if you are uploading your biography.
Adanma Nwankwo is a London-based, Nigerian interdisciplinary artist. In her practice, she is interested in the power the individual has in influencing its wider collective reality/consciousness. Thus, her work is centred on personal healing and cultural history - investigating the point at which, both practices begin to influence and affect one another, through her exploration of identity, the psychology of childhood, and play as a form of healing. (Play as a form of collective healing) Her works manifest through a range of media namely sculpture, printmaking, performance, film, installation, and talks. She has had two solo exhibitions in Nigeria, and has shown in over ten group shows in the UK, including a recent commission for the Barbican Center's, 'What Do We Becom' exhibition in April 2023.
Interested in the intersection between the personal and the collective, my work approaches social justice as a form of individual re-empowerment. When larger social structures fail to adequately provide or represent the people, how are we as individuals empower ourselves to hold or create these necessities or spaces for ourselves? An example of this is my project, 'People and their crafts'. In Nigeria, the documentation of pre-colonial history and traditional crafts is viewed as unimportant to the main political leader. Hence, 'People and their crafts' is a community-based project I created, using my practice as an archive to study, document and represent the works of traditional craftspeople in Nigeria.
